pottery open workshop
These non-instructional sessions allow you to use our studio to practice on the wheel or finish work started in class. Both fall and winter sessions use high-fire stoneware clay. Only work produced at the Shadbolt Centre from clay purchased here can be fired in our kilns. Open workshops are offered on a drop-in, first-come basis. These sessions are not designed to accommodate “production” potters but to allow students to develop their skills.

deer lake park heritage walking tour
Deer Lake Park is Burnaby's best-preserved heritage area and features a fascinating collection of Edwardian country homes and landscapes. The homes surrounding Deer Lake, built between 1904 and 1935, were developed by their owners with an idealized view of the English countryside in mind. "Splendid mansions surrounded by spacious lawns and grounds soon tell the visitor that this district is one of the choice country residential sections for the wealthy of Vancouver and New Westminster," reported one newspaper in 1912. The landscapes designed for many of these gracious old homes remain integral to the experience of the lakeshore setting and convey a special sense of history to the park visitor. Burnaby's Community Heritage Commission has developed a 1 1/2- 2-hour self-guided walking tour, which highlights the history of these protected heritage buildings. Pick up a free guide at Burnaby Village Museum, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts or Burnaby Art Gallery.
