The Planning Department provides professional and technical advice to City Council on the current and future uses of land in the City and on issues concerning housing, the environment, transportation and social policy. The Planning Department is organized into two sections:

Current Planning
The Current Planning Section manages current planning projects in Burnaby and is responsible for planning issues relating to Development Plan Areas, Rezoning, Subdivision, Preliminary Plan Approvals, Urban Design, Urban Trails, Bicycle Routes and Planning Information Services.

Long Range Planning

The Long Range Planning Section develops the Official Community Plan which provides the future vision for the City of Burnaby. The Long Range Section is also responsible for planning issues related to the Environment, Transportation Planning, Housing, Neighbourhood Area Planning, Social Planning and Heritage Planning. |
