Burnaby Social Sustainability Strategy Logo

"

Burnaby Council has assembled a blue-ribbon panel to develop an exemplary Social Sustainability Strategy, selecting members for their: commitment to social issues; broad and balanced base of experience; belief in Burnaby's potential; and willingness to contribute to and advocate on behalf of the community. With significant opportunities for public involvement, Committee members will draw on the energy, creativity and innovation of all Burnaby citizens. I look forward to working with them to develop a Social Sustainability Strategy for Burnaby that will benefit all residents of our city.

Working Group Meeting Schedule

The City of Burnaby is committed to Social, Financial, Environmental and Cultural Sustainability

To ensure Social Sustainability, Burnaby City Council has directed development of a strategy that will build on existing goals and on Burnaby's positive social attributes and assets to guide decisions and resource allocations for social issues. With the Economic Development and the Environmental Sustainability strategies, the Social Sustainability Strategy will provide a foundation for the continued strengthening of Burnaby's overall well-being, enhancing Burnaby's status as a livable, vibrant and sustainable community – a place that facilitates an engaged and active citizenry, a healthy economy and a strong respect for and stewardship of the natural environment.

To maximize citizen involvement, several working groups – including invited participants who are knowledgeable and concerned about specific social issues -- will operate as part of a Social Sustainability Strategy Steering Committee, addressing subjects such as: arts and culture; children and youth; community well-being; family issues (including childcare); health; housing; immigrant settlement and multiculturalism; accessibility; public education; public safety; seniors. Citizens will also be invited to review the draft Strategy.

The first meeting of the Steering Committee is March 30, 2010, with the process scheduled for completion in 15 months.
