Environment Week 2010

This year’s theme is ‘Our Food, Our Future’, so come on out and enjoy Burnaby’s Environment Week with a smorgasbord of fun and educational activities. There’s something for everyone and a real opportunity to discover the latest environmentally friendly choices at home, work and play. The main event will take place Saturday May 29th from 9am to 2pm with live music and barbeque next to the thriving Farmer’s Market at Burnaby’s City Hall. Burnaby cares about its environment; give yourself the time to explore what makes it great.

Burnaby Public Library Displays
Check out a visual feast of books and other information material relating to this year’s theme of “Our Food, Our Future” from Monday May 24th to Sunday June 6th at Burnaby’s four fantastic public libraries.

FRIDAY, MAY 28 – SUNDAY, MAY 30

Burnaby Central Park Eco-Sculpture Viewing
Bears, salmon, eagles and bees will be among the many Eco-Sculptures found in Burnaby’s Central Park just north of the Patterson Skytrain Station and on display from dusk to dawn. After Sunday, each sculpture will be sited for the season throughout Burnaby in their own habitat. SATURDAY, MAY 29, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Environmental Festival at Burnaby City Hall (4949 Canada Way)
This is the main event of the week with live bluegrass music from HIGHRISE LONESOME and a food barbeque for everyone to enjoy. Tents and tables will have information displays and handouts on environmental activities, events and programs relating to Burnaby. The event will be held in conjunction with the very successful City Hall Farmers Market to highlight sustainable food production and the barbeque will be operated by Burnaby Food Services showcasing their own environmentally friendly food initiatives.

Honeybees in a portable apiary will also be on display and operated by the Honeybee Centre. This is an opportunity to observe and experience bees and learn more about the field of apiculture. Information about Burnaby’s new 2009 urban beekeeping regulations will also be available.

SATURDAYS, MAY 1 to OCTOBER 30, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Farmers Market at Burnaby City Hall (4949 Canada Way)
The Farmers Market at Burnaby City Hall blooms with activity every Saturday from May 1st to October 31st. Special events and displays are planned for Environment Week at the market on May 29th and June 5th. Located in the parking lot off Deer Lake Parkway, there will be delicious farm goods, cool crafts and tasty prepared foods available. Go to www.artisanmarkets.ca for more information.

THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM

Burrard Inlet Kayak Trips at Barnet Marine Park
Organized by Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, there will be two salty kayak excursions on Thursday June 3rd; one from 6pm to 7pm and another 7:15pm to 8:15pm. Starting from the Barnet Marine Park, this event is for people 16 years and older. Those under 19 must have the waiver form signed by a parent. FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 4:00 PM

‘The New Generation of Farmers’ - Heather Pritchard, Farm Folk/City Folk
Listen to Heather Pritchard speak about food and the future in an afternoon talk at Bob Prittie Metrotown Branch Library (6100 Willingdon Avenue, Program Room). Organic farmer and co-author of the book, ‘Farm Folk/City Folk’, Heather is keen about the Farm Folk/City Folk Society’s Community Farms Program. Burnaby and Region Allotment Gardens Association (BARAGA)
Community Garden Tours
Organized by the Burnaby and Region Allotment Gardens Association, tours of this large and popular community garden in the Big Bend neighbourhood will be open to the public. Guided by volunteers, the 30-45 minute tours will offer details on the gardens’ past, present and future. Go to www.baraga.ca for more information.

SUNDAY, JUNE 6, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Car Trunk Sale! Bill Copeland Sports Centre (3676 Kensington Avenue)
Free for buyers, this popular gathering is for used items only and will run from 9am to 2pm rain or shine! It’s the third one of the year; sellers must register for individual parking stalls by contacting the Bill Copeland Sports Centre at (604) 291-1261.

SATURDAY, JUNE 12, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Burnaby Recycling Complex Open House (4800 Still Creek Avenue)
The City of Burnaby’s Recycling and Yard Waste Depot will be hosting this event with City staff available to answer questions on recycling, composting, waste reduction and the City’s new Food Scraps Recycling Program initiative. Celebrate Environment Week!

Burnaby residents are encouraged to use pedal power on their daily commutes during Bike to Work Week. Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC) will be hosting commuter stations in Burnaby during the week, where cyclists are rewarded with free refreshments, bike tune-ups, prizes and give-aways.
