As of the end of 1996, the City operates and maintains 678 km of water main, 2,942 hydrants and 36,000 water services. The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) supplies our water to us. The water supplied comes from three reservoirs the GVWD own, the Capilano reservoir, Seymour reservoir, and the Coquitlam reservoir with the majority of the water supplied to Burnaby from the Seymour reservoir. Our crews respond to emergency calls for broken water mains or leaky services and undertake regular maintenance of the valves, hydrants, pump stations and reservoirs that make up our water system components. You can find out more about water and the type of most commonly asked questions by going to the FAQ. Some examples of the type of work we do and the equipment we use are shown here.
Watch for future updates. We intend to highlight a particular activity or program each time we update the page so that we can provide more detailed information and explanations about what we're doing to maintain and improve Burnaby's infrastructure.
The Operations Department is conducting its annual program of flushing and cleaning of watermains. This might result in the water supply showing sediment in some areas. This may cause the water to be discoloured and may affect some industrial processes. If you have questions or specific concerns, please contact the Engineering Department at 604-294-7221.
