Burnaby, Let's Recycle More!

Help keep recyclables out of Burnaby's garbage! Thanks to the recycling efforts of residents and businesses in Burnaby we have reduced the amount of garbage going to regional waste disposal facilities by over 40% since 1990.

Starting January 1, 2008, a new regional recycling and disposal ban will come into effect that will help us further reduce the amount of garbage going to our regions' waste disposal facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a new recycling and disposal regulation?
Residents and businesses in the Greater Vancouver region produce about 3.2 million tonnes of garbage each year, of which, 1.6 million tonnes (approx. 52%) is diverted from disposal through reduce, reuse and recycle programs. From an environmental perspective, reducing the amount of garbage we produce and increasing our recycling efforts is an important step in moving towards a long-term goal of sustainability.

Will the new recycling and disposal regulation apply to all communities in the Greater Vancouver region?
Yes, the new recycling and disposal regulation will apply to all communities in the region. Metro Vancouver (formerly the GVRD), has adopted the Zero Waste Challenge as a new approach to manage solid waste (garbage) for the region. The new recycling and disposal regulation is just one part of this new strategy. For more information on the Zero Waste Challenge, click here - [NEW WINDOW] or call 604-432-6200.

How does the new recycling and disposal regulation affect waste disposal?
Residents and business operators will not be allowed to leave recyclables and yard trimmings in the waste (garbage) stream. All recyclables and yard trimmings will have to be placed in the recycling bin and yard waste containers (bags) respectively, and all materials recyclable through provincial stewardship programs must be taken to the appropriate recycling locations. Garbage that is found to contain the recyclable materials will not be picked up and a notice will be attached to the container or bag explaining the new recycling and disposal regulations.

Please place the recyclable items and yard trimmings in appropriate containers for collection by the City recycling crews or take the recyclables to the Burnaby Recycling Depot located at 4800 Still Creek Avenue.

The City of Burnaby is committed to preserving natural resources and protecting the environment through better waste management practices.
