Absolutely. Removing recyclable materials from our garbage not only reduces the amount of material entering our landfills but also reduces pollution and saves valuable energy and resources. Recycling all of your home's newsprint, glass, and metal can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 400 kg per year.
Thanks to Burnaby residents and businesses, we have reduced the amount of waste going to our regions' waste disposal facilities by over %, but we can all do more. A recent waste composition study done in 2004 by Metro Vancouver revealed that we are still throwing away a lot of material that could be recycled (e.g. almost 10% of the disposed waste is still made up of recyclable paper and cardboard).

While recycling is important, it isn't the only solution. In the 3R's hierarchy, Reduce and Reuse come before Recycle. So what can you do?
Reduce - by buying what you need or buying products that have little or no packaging.
Reuse – by buying quality products that can be reused or buying items that can be refilled.
