Thanks to Burnaby residents and businesses, we have reduced the amount of garbage going to our region's transfer stations and disposal facilities by over 40% since 1990. Help us reduce more by adhering to these recycling guidelines:
Newsprint

Newspapers and their newsprint inserts. |

Place in Blue Bag. |

No plastic bags, wire, other types of paper. |
Mixed Paper

All other paper products, including: magazines, bulk mail, telephone books, cereal boxes, paper egg cartons, envelopes etc. |

Place in Yellow Bag. |

Reminders:
- Set recycling out at the curb by 7:00am on your collection day.
- Collection moves forward a day after a statutory holiday.

Garbage Collection Guidelines:

Garbage collection is limited to one (1) wheeled container per week.

All garbage must fit into the container with the lid closed. Do not overfill the container; overfilled containers will not be collected.

Garbage must be bagged inside the wheeled containers (no loose household waste please).

Garbage must be set out by 7am on your regular scheduled collection day.

Items that do not qualitfy for normal garbage pick up or are banned from the garbage can be disposed of at special depots or through specialized waste management companies. See below for examples of unacceptable garbage and disposal options.
Materials Not Accepted As Garbage:

- Liquids of any kind
- Household chemicals (cleaners, soaps)
- Building and demolition materials
- Drywall*
- Dirt, rocks and sod
- Animal waste and carcasses
- Household batteries, including rechargeable (accepted at the City's Recycling Depot)
- Recyclable materials accepted in the City's recycling program & Recycling Depot:
- Cardboard, newspaper, office paper, mixed waste paper (boxboard, magazines, envelopes, directories)*
- Glass and metal food containers*
- Plastic containers numbered 1, 2, 4 & 5* & plastic shopping bags
- Household paints, stains & their containers including aerosol* (accepted at the City's Recycling Depot)
- Solvents, flammable liquids & gasoline* (accepted at the City's Recycling Depot)
- Lead acid (vehicle) batteries* (accepted at the City's Recycling Depot)
- Prescription & non-prescription drugs* (accepted at the City's Recycling Depot)
- Motor oil & containers* (accepted at the City's Recycling Depot)
- Oil filters* (accepted at the City's Recycling Depot)
- Car parts
- Vehicle tires*
- Electronic goods including computers & their peripherals, desk-top printers & televisions* (See Burnaby's Recycling and Yard Waste Depot for drop off locations for televisions)

The City of Burnaby provides weekly yard waste collection for single and two-family homes. Yard waste collection is provided year-round on the same day as your garbage and recycling. The City collects yard waste using an automated collection system that uses specially designated wheeled containers for collection. Yard Waste Collection Guidelines:
- Yard waste is only accepted in sepcially designated wheeled containers issued by the City. Residents may purchase additional yard waste containers from the City and put them out for collection. Click here for more information.
- Yard waste must fit into the yard waste container(s). Do not overfill the container(s); overfilled containers will not be collected.
- Yard waste placed out in any other container other than the designated wheeled containers will not be collected.
- DO NOT bag or bundle yard waste, place loose yard waste directly into the container.
- Extra yard waste can be dropped off at the Still Creek Recycling Depot (4800 Still Creek Avenue, west of Douglas). The depot is open 7 days per week, except holidays, from 8:00am to 3:45pm. Residents can drop off up to 100kg of yard waste for free per day.
- Christmas trees are collected during a designated week in January. Trees can be placed beside your garbage and yard waste container (they do not have to fit inside the container). Trees can also be dropped off at the Still Creek Recycling Depot.

Compost to Reduce Your Yard Waste 
Yard and garden trimmings, along with uncooked fruit and veggie peelings, can be composted in your own backyard, resulting in a rich soil amendment for your garden. Composters are available from the City of Burnaby Yard Waste Depot (4800 Still Creek Avenue) for $30.00 each.
