On Sunday, September 10, 1939, Canada declared war
on Germany, joining Great Britain and France in an effort to stop the
imperialist ambitions of, first the Nazis, and later the Japanese government.
Before peace was negotiated in 1945, the Second World War would claim
more than 50 million casualties, both civilian and military. Most combatants
were young men and women, much like the five veterans we feature in
this presentation. The following are artifacts from the war years -
recruitment posters, advertisements, letters, and other documents that
record Canadian life and attitudes during that tumultuous time.
