Charting Change - Deer Lake 1905/2000
The legacy of Burnaby’s history can be seen in every corner of our city. Our natural and cultural heritage encompasses a wide range of resources, including buildings and structures, which contribute to the unique character of each neighbourhood. This atlas includes all protected heritage resources and other heritage sites on the historic maps (1825, 1905, 1925 & 1955) to provide their original setting and the 2001 map to illustrate the modern context.
Burnaby’s City Council, with guidance from the Community Heritage Commission and the community, has endeavored to protect both public and privately-owned features of importance through designating them as municipal heritage sites. This designation by civic bylaw protects these properties from alteration without the direct approval of Burnaby City Council. Owners of historic Burnaby buildings or homes may request that Council consider the designation of their property at any time and benefit from available incentives. Burnaby has to date designated thirty-seven buildings and structures as municipal heritage landmarks.
Burnaby’s Community Heritage Commission initiated this map poster as an official project to celebrate and mark the Millennium. This historic atlas is the first to document all the City’s protected heritage resources, and illustrate the evolution of Burnaby. Each of the five maps depict Burnaby in a selected year that marks both the end of a significant era and the beginning of another.
