City of Burnaby - Inlet Drive Ruptured Pipeline

Update: May 7th, 2008

Message from the Mayor

Several months have passed since the oil pipe line on Inlet Drive was ruptured. The City would like to thank the residents of Burnaby for their patience and cooperation during these trying times. The following information provides the latest status of the clean up work and restoration work.In this newsletter, I am writing to let you know the latest status of the clean up and restoration work.

To date, the clean up work on the public infrastructure is substantially complete. Kinder Morgan Canada continues to work diligently with individual homeowners within the primary impact zone on Inlet Drive and Belcarra Drive to address the damage to property and to carry out the restoration plan. The City will continue to work with Kinder Morgan Canada to fully restore the oil impacted area and environment and to establish a monitoring plan to assess short term and long term impact of the oil spill.

The City would like to thank all the residents within the oil impacted area for their strong community spirit in bringing the neighbourhood closer together in time of adversity. The City has carefully monitored the recovery progress and has heard from many residents on the oil spill incident and is extremely impressed by the strength and resiliency of the community and its citizens.

As the remaining restoration work continues, the City will work with other agencies to learn from this unfortunate incident and to make this community a safer place for all.

Barnet Marine Park and Drummond's Walk

The beach and trails were re-opened after an inspection in early November 2007. Based on the inspection conducted by Fraser Health Authority staff on May 1, 2008, swimming restrictions at Barnet Marine Park beach have been lifted. The City would like to remind residents that at this point in time lifeguards are currently not on duty and ask that residents take care and caution while taking part in water-based activities.

Belcarra Drive

The base lift of the asphalt pavement is completed. Final layer of asphalt and outstanding boulevard restoration will be done once the restoration work on the private lands is finished.

Inlet Drive

As of February 2008 the north and south sidewalk along Inlet Drive was re-opened to pedestrian use.

Cleaning work on the sidewalks, retaining walls and median has been completed. The areas which were originally finished with stamped concrete (medians and area between the curb and concrete sidewalk) have been temporarily finished and will be reinstated in stamped concrete in the near future. The majority of the landscaping work on City property has been completed with the remaining work to be completed by the end of spring 2008.
